Joseph Bisat MarshallConducting Typography2013

This project explored typography as a means of performance. It expressed the performance of the song As Long as He Needs Me, from Oliver! through an understanding of typography as being experiential. It was designed with particular reference to the 19th century concrete poets who, with Marinetti at the vanguard, began a Futurist movement that aimed to intensify the meaning of the text and boost the effect of the words through expressive presentation.

The project was completed in two iterations; the first as a layered print and the second as a three-dimensional installation. Both are arrangements of typographic forms in an attempt to communicate the meaning of the words they express. An extended piece of writing exists alongside the project.
