Character Counts is an initiative launched by Carlton le Willows Academy with the aim of developing pupil’s character alongside academia. The eight character traits that are at the heart of the initiative required iconography that could be used around the school and for promotion. With headteacher Craig Weaver, we developed the project beyond its original scope by creating eight designs that can be used both individually and as part of a larger image that forms the words ‘Character Counts’ and emphasises the idea of character being a sum of its parts. This was the basis of a complete and versatile branding system that is unique to the school and their mission.

A five-meter wide wall installation is the most prominent of the material designed for display. The eight character icons were printed on large wooden panels that were fitted to the wall in sequence; each one retains its natural wood-grain, celebrating imperfection as part of the ethos of the initiative.

Other material – including website, blog, character cards, academy gifts, wall vinyls, certificates, weekly awards, badges, banners and leaflets – was designed to aid the teaching methods being used to develop pupils’ understanding of character. I’m told that that the project has been a great success.
